Eltek Valere Announces Reaching Milestone of 150,000 High Efficiency Power Modules Shipped

Market Acceptance of HE Rectifier Modules Has Eliminated Tens of Thousands of Tons of CO2 and Saved Carriers Millions of Dollars Annually

DRAMMEN, NORWAY – Sept. 1, 2010 – Eltek Valere, the world leader in high efficiency power systems, today announced that its flagship Flatpack2 high efficiency (HE) rectifier product line has reached a milestone of 150,000 units shipped, thus significantly impacting the environmental effort to lower the power consumption of global telecommunications operations as well as the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere.

The company estimates that the deployment of 150,000 Flatpack2 HE units has cut close to 120 million kilowatt hours in wasted electricity, reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 80,000 tons and is currently saving carriers more than $12 million in power related operating expense annually.

The Flatpack2 HE family of power rectifiers is used in telecom applications around the world. They set a new industry standard of 96.5 percent efficiency that cuts by half the power that is wasted due to the AC-to-DC conversion process.

Eighty percent of all energy consumed by the telecom industry goes through DC power equipment supplied by Eltek Valere and its main competitors. Recognizing the need to help carriers reduce their impact on the environment, Eltek Valere began in 2008 to convert its entire rectifier line to high efficiency power and today has green HE solutions for every telecommunications application, while the rest of the industry is just now addressing this challenge.

“Reaching this landmark of 150,000 high efficiency rectifiers sold is a significant achievement supporting our world leadership role in green power, and has set an example other power suppliers are now following,” said Morten Schoyen, CMO of Eltek Valere. “In addition, the deployment of these rectifiers contributes significantly toward lowering the world’s power consumption by helping carriers implement alternative power into their networks. This has cut their energy costs and encouraged them to be environmentally friendly as well. The success of the Eltek Valere HE rectifier product line is a win for both our customers and the environment.”

New Trilogy DC Power System Offers the Highest Power Conversion Efficiency in the Industry with an Innovative Twist

New high-efficiency, short-depth DC power system also
features groundbreaking solar energy management option

RICHARDSON, TX – Aug. 16, 2010 – Eltek Valere today announced the Trilogy DC power system, a 40A-600A, 48V high-efficiency (HE) power system with 15” shelf depth and special cable management to fit into short-depth outside plant and central office applications.

Although not exclusive to solar applications, the Trilogy DC power plant does offer convenient solar energy management, allowing service providers to use the sun as a back-up power source without the need for a separate, discrete power plant. This capability is made possible with the Smartpack controller—standard with the Trilogy system—which can manage AC power input from the grid and DC solar energy input from a solar array to optimize power conversion.

The Trilogy system is based on Eltek Valere’s market-leading Flatpack2 HE rectifier that is more than 96 percent efficient. In addition to the 15-inch rectifier depth, the system also has vertical cable landings for the breakers that guide cables out the top or side of the system.

“Space has always been at a premium for telecom applications, but now that limitation is compounded with a desire to reduce power consumption and go green,” said Allen Pitts, Eltek Valere President for the Americas region. “Trilogy is ideal for this next-gen network environment because it’s small and gives carriers the option of integrating alternative power sources to save money and meet their green initiatives.”

Trilogy can be configured in a two-shelf system for up to 300A of power, a three-shelf system for 400A of power or a four-shelf system for 600A of power. The shelves can fit into a 19- or 23-inch rack. The high efficiency of the system also significantly reduces heat output compared to the industry standard power efficiency, lowering the amount of cooling needed.

For solar applications, the Trilogy utilizes 48V Flatpack2 HE Solar Chargers to convert solar energy to usable DC power. The solar converters provide output power of 1500W with 96 percent power conversion efficiency. Each solar charger module utilizes maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technology to optimize solar output and utilization of the free energy from the sun collected by a solar array.

The Smartpack controller simultaneously manages both the AC mains and the input from the solar converters. The controller has built-in digital alarm inputs and form C output relays for sensors, allowing the controller to monitor both operational and environmental elements of the system. Smartpack also features an Ethernet port for network/Internet remote accessibility.

The Trilogy system provides an AC junction box, eliminating the need to wire each power shelf. The Trilogy distribution also features both breaker-protected and bulk output landings, a low-voltage disconnect option and a two-bus system for discrete output (like batteries and load) within the same panel.

The Trilogy DC power system is now available from Eltek Valere’s worldwide sales team and area resellers.

Leading South Pacific Carrier Powers Wireless Network

Digicel Pacific optimizes remote network site power by combining diesel generator sets with solar powered DC power plant

MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS - BARCELONA – Feb. 10, 2010 – Eltek Valere today announced that leading South Pacific wireless operator Digicel Pacific has installed a hybrid solar-diesel DC power system based on the company’s Flatpack2 HE Solar Charger to build out its wireless network serving Papua New Guinea (PNG).

The announcement was made just before Mobile World Congress (Feb. 15-18), where Eltek Valere will be demonstrating its DC power solutions for wireless networks in stand 7GP3.

Digicel Pacific implemented a 35-tower high capacity microwave backbone and basestation network to provide more bandwidth for its mobile phone customers on the island. But the rugged terrain of PNG, one of the least explored areas in the world, meant that many of those sites were in areas not served by grid power.

Initially, Digicel Pacific deployed battery-powered network equipment with diesel generators to charge the batteries. These generators ran continuously but only at an efficiency of only 20 percent of load and were fed by monthly helicopter fuel runs, translating to a cost of US$6 per kWh.

With the hybrid-solar solution, Digicel installed photovoltaic cells in addition to the generators and was able to reduce generator hours to four per day and boost efficiency to 80%-90% of load which reduced costs to about US$1 per kWh.

An integral part of the solution was an Eltek Valere DC power system that converted both solar and generator power into 48V DC for the load. The Eltek Valere solution is composed of the Flatpack2 HE Solar Charger and the Flatpack2 rectifier. The Smartpack Controller manages the entire system, monitoring battery power levels and input voltage levels from the solar system and switching between the solar system and the diesel gen-set. The Smartpack features also include advance battery monitoring routines, as well as gen-set optimization programs and considerable data log¬ging options.

“Digicel Pacific faced a unique challenge in building a network across a country with topography as difficult as Papua New Guinea,” said Kenneth Bodahl, Managing Director of Asia Pacific for Eltek Valere. “Rather than fight the environment, we were able to provide them with a flexible power solution that enabled them to both expand their network while cutting costs dramatically.”

The Flatpack2 HE Solar Charger connects to four to six solar panels and converts the solar power into controlled 48VDC for supply to telecom equipment.
The solar charger is based on Eltek Valere’s industry-leading High Efficiency (HE) technology, which delivers more than 96% AC-DC power conversion efficiency.

About Digicel Pacific
